I am interested in the symbiotic relationships that exist between different protist species and those between protists and prokaryotes up to the derivation of cell organelles. I am combining diverse lab techniques (e.g., electron microscopy, FISH) with bioinformatics to investigate the origins of the symbioses and the functional/metabolic role of the partners. By using a phylogenomic approach, I currently aim to improve our understanding of the early diversification of the main eukaryote groups. Among other approaches, I use molecular dating calibrated with the microfossil records in order to shed light on the timing of acquisitions of complex red algal plastids by a wide array of protists.
